KITE AUCTION

Dear Fellow Kite Flyers,

This year at the 11th Suffolk Kite festival we aim to hold the first ever SFK Kite Auction on the Saturday evening with proceeds going towards funding the 12th Suffolk Kite Festival the following year and this year's chosen charity “ East Anglian Air Ambulance “ Reg. Charity 1083676
For this to work we need to have as many new/used kites and kite related stuff as possible up for auction.
Do you have an old kite sitting somewhere, all alone, up in that loft that could be yearning for a new home?
Maybe you bought a power kite with the intention of flying it but never really got around to it.
Could be that you bought more kite lines than you really needed from ebay one day.
Possibly you’ve got a very kind heart and in an impetuous moment of madness will donate your prized Blade or Quantum Pro
Bought a Rev and can’t fly it – donate it!
Could be you’re an expert flyer and would consider donating a lesson
Anything and everything is willingly taken in for the auction.

SAMUAL FRANKLIN CODY MAN-LIFTING KITES

Do you own a Cody kite or do you know who does ?

In one of the many books written about S.F.Cody it mentions that in 1904/5 he undertook some experiments in an Army Barracks in Bury St. Edmunds. Rougham Airfield is only 2 miles from Bury and to celebrate his great kiting achievements we would like to have as many Cody Kites as possible at our 11th festival this year.
We already have 5/6 Cody kites coming and includes Paul Chapman from Bristol, Kelvin Woods and at least two from members of the Great Ouse Kite Club and own Suffolk Kite Flyer’s member Norman Cotterell who has made a massive13ft. reproduction.

Cody successfully lifted a passenger to a record height of 2,600 ft on the end of a cable 4,000ft long. In 1906 the War Office agreed to use Cody's kites for the purpose of observation. Cody was not only given the position of Chief Kite Instructor at Farnborough but became responsible for designing and manufacturing war kites

Cody's War Kites continued to be used for some years until they were replaced by the aeroplane. Cody began to experiment with aeroplanes and in 1908 he became the first man to build and fly an aeroplane in Britain.

On 7th of August 1913 Cody and his passenger were killed while flying his latest creation, the Waterplane. It broke up in the air over Laffan's Plain, Aldershot.
